If you've changed jobs or recently retired, a Rollover IRA can help you take control of your retirement assets and preserve the tax advantages you have with your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored plan. The Downside
  • As with all IRAs, withdrawals before age 59 1/2 may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty tax for early withdrawal.
Important Notes
  • Do not accept a check for the proceeds from your former employer's plan. The employer will be required to withhold 20%, even if you plan to immediately redeposit it. Moreover, unless you redeposit the entire value (your check plus the 20% withholding), you will be required to pay income taxes plus a penalty tax on the 20% withheld.
