As an Ameriprise financial advisor, you'll help shape your clients' financial futures. It's a tremendous responsibility, but you won't be alone. You'll have access to extensive training and custom learning paths — reinforced by support from your local leadership.

Whichever career path you choose, you'll have access to a comprehensive new advisor training program that will give you the foundation you need for success. From there, you can choose from a variety of ways to learn:

  • Live and virtual classrooms
  • Online self-study courses
  • Area office, market group activities and training sessions
  • Educational workshops on a variety of career development topics at strategic points in your training

Although not required, we support advisors in pursuing their Chartered Retirement Planning CounselorSM and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM certifications and/or other professional designations.

Required training and learning opportunities vary across our three advisor opportunities, as outlined below.

Overview

In the Advisor Career Development Program, you'll begin a three-year training that will give you the foundation you need for success. New advisors are placed in well-established branch offices so you'll have support as your career evolves.

Licensing

From your first day with Ameriprise, you will receive compensation and benefits as you prepare for your licensing exams. Ameriprise Financial pays all fees associated with the exams and licenses, which include:

  • FINRA Series 7 for general securities
  • FINRA Series 66, covering state laws, ethics and securities policies
  • Life/health insurance license(s)

You have up to 150 days after hire to complete all licensing.

Build knowledge and skills

Once you're licensed and registered, you'll continue your formal training as you learn how to:

  • Build your practice through proven advice strategies and marketing activities
  • Understand financial products and services
  • Use our technology tools
  • Manage back-office support
  • Build your personal brand
  • Develop a client contact strategy and marketing plan
  • Create your website
  • Generate leads
  • Acquire new clients

Overview

As an Associate Financial Advisor (AFA), you'll be a licensed and registered advisor and work as an employee or contractor for a successful Ameriprise franchise advisor. You'll learn through hands-on participation and training the financial advisor makes available.

Licensing

You'll need to earn these required licenses and registrations:

  • FINRA Series 7
  • FINRA Series 63 or 66
  • FINRA Series 65 or 66 (required in your resident state and every state/jurisdiction where you maintain an office)
  • Life/health insurance license(s)
  • Variable products

You have up to 150 days after appointment to complete all licensing. You may be required to attain additional licensures depending on the activities you are engaging in.

Build knowledge and skills

You will work with a franchise advisor to develop your onboarding plan. As you integrate into the franchise practice, you will learn how to:

  • Become part of a successful team
  • Use our technology tools
  • Build your personal brand
  • Develop your website
  • Set up and acquire new clients

Before you can begin selling products or services, you will also complete courses through our online training. Your franchise advisor may make additional training available.

Overview

The Ameriprise Advisor Center (AAC) is a fast-paced learning environment that prepares you for a financial advisor career. You'll learn how to work with clients in a team environment, either over the phone, online or through email.

Licensing

We'll sponsor you and provide study materials to help you earn these licenses and registrations required for advancement:

  • FINRA Series 7 for general securities sales
  • FINRA Series 63 or 66 covering state laws, ethics and securities knowledge
  • Life/health insurance license(s)

Build knowledge and skills

You'll take part in classroom training, role-plays, software training and online courses that will help you:

  • Communicate effectively with clients, including scheduling appointments
  • Build a rapport with clients
  • Learn how to become part of a successful team
  • Use our technology tools
  • Utilize practice support

Advancement opportunities

After beginning your career in the AAC as a client service coordinator, there are many opportunities for advancement:

  • Advance into a licensed role within the AAC
  • Work toward becoming a sales manager, solutions specialist or trainer, allowing you to lead and coach a team of advisors
